Clinics & Services

In addition to general consultations we are pleased to offer the following services:

Antenatal - Clinics are run by the midwives on a Wednesday and Friday morning. In addition are appointments available with all of the doctors.

Family planning - including "coil" fitting & Implanon is carried out during surgery consultations.

Child immunisation clinic - run by the nurses on a Wednesday and Thursday mornings. If you have not received an appointment for your child, or have missed one, please attend between these times or make an appointment with the nurse.

Diabetic clinic - run by the practice nursing team with support from The GP Diabetes Lead

Long term conditions - run by the Practice Nursing team. This clinic offers valuable advice and general health checkup to patients diagnosed with co-morbidities including Heart conditions and other long term conditions.  Appointments are available throughout the week. 

Asthma Clinic and COPD Clinic- run by the Practice Nursing team and available throughout the week

Minor surgery - Dr Hunter.

Healthy heart clinic – regular clinics with the nurses.

Phlebotomy - sessions available daily and at weekends through our Extended access clinics

NHS Health checks.

Cancer Care Reviews - Cancer care reviews are carried out with a member of the practice clinical team alongside a Macmillan Community Care Co-ordinator.  The review normally takes place within 6-12 months following diagnosis

What is a Holistic Needs Assessment (HNA)?

A Holistic Needs Assessment (HNA) Concerns Checklist is a simple questionnaire that is completed by a person affected by cancer. It allows them to highlight the most important issues to them at that time, and this can inform the development of a care and support plan with their nurse or key worker. It usually takes about 10 minutes to complete.

Non-NHS Services

Some services provided are not covered under our contract with the NHS and therefore attract charges. Examples include the following:

• Medicals for pre-employment, sports and driving requirements (HGV, PSV etc.)
• Insurance claim forms
• Passport signing
• Prescriptions for taking medication abroad
• Private sick notes
• Vaccination certificates

The fees charged are based on the British Medical Association (BMA) suggested scales and our reception staff will be happy to advise you about them along with appointment availability. 

Fit To Fly

We are able to assist with providing letters confirming patients are Fit to Fly,  but cannot assist with letters requesting fast tracking through the airport queueing system. If you wish to avoid queuing you will need to arrange a Fast Track Priority pass through the airport.

If a GP or another member of our health care team believes you need hospital treatment or specialist care elsewhere, they will refer you on to the appropriate specialist.

All referrals, except re-referrals, are sent through the Referral Assessment Service(RAS). The RAS team will contact you once they have received the referral to offer you the opportunity to select a Hospital of your choice for treatment. You will also be able to book your appointment at this time, if one is available; if there are no appointments available then you will be put onto that Hospital's waiting list and will be contacted directly by them in due course.

Your GP should give you a form explaining where your referral has gone and giving details of any action you need to take.

It is important that we have up to date contact details for you in order for this to happen. Could you please check that we have your home and mobile telephone numbers where applicable as well as your current address at the time of referral.

Mammography and Smears

(To detect early treatable breast cancer and cervical changes which if neglected may become cancerous)

The frequency of cervical smears varies from individual to individual and national screening policy is subject to change in the light of research.  Currently it is Women between the ages of 25 and 64 (England) / 21 and 60 (Scotland) / 20 – 64 (Wales) / 20 – 65 (NI), are offered cervical screening at intervals defined nationally.  Currently, the screening intervals are:

• First call – Age 25
• 25 – 49 – Screened every three years
• 50 – 64 – Screened every five years
• 65+ – only screen those who have not been screened since age 50 or have had recent abnormal tests. Women aged 65 or over who have had 3 consecutive negative smears are taken out of the recall programme.  Or as specified in national directives for the various parts of the UK.

Nationally, 3 yearly mammograms are advised between the age of 50 and 65 (although we would advise continuing beyond 65. You can arrange this by special request). Your doctor will automatically send you an appointment for these programmes which are largely carried out by nurses.  Please check your arrangements if in doubt.

Medications in Flying

• Benzodiazepines can affect your  memory, co-ordination, concentration and reaction times, which can be dangerous while travelling in the event of an emergency. 
• They are also addictive, and are a widely used drug of abuse since they first came on the market. In the UK Diazepam is classed as a Controlled Drug, but it is also illegal in a number of countries. Patients taking diazepam abroad may find themselves in violation of local drug laws. 
• Diazepam will stay in your system for quite a while. If your job requires you to submit to random drug testing you may fail this having taken diazepam, even briefly.
• Diazepam does not always have a sedative effect; it may increase agitation and aggression in some patients. This would put other passengers at risk. 
• Diazepam puts you at an increased  risk of developing a blood clot (Deep Vein Thrombosis - DVT) in the leg or even the lungs. Blood clots are very dangerous and can prove fatal; they are particularly associated with long haul flights.
• They can cause your breathing rate to slow down, which can be dangerous as blood oxygen levels are already reduced at high altitude.
• According to the prescribing guidelines doctors follow (British National Formulary) diazepam is not allowed for treatment of fear or phobia.  Your doctor would be taking a significant legal risk by prescribing against these guidelines. 

As with all travel arrangements, it is important to declare all medical conditions and medications you take to your travel insurer. If not, there is a risk of nullifying any insurance policy you may have.

Severn Fields Medical Practice is an Armed Forces veteran friendly accredited GP practice.

Being accredited by the Royal College of General Practitioners means that a practice can better identify and treat veterans, refer them, where appropriate, to dedicated NHS services (such as the Veterans’ Mental Health Transition, Intervention and Liaison service (TILS), the Veterans’ Mental Health Complex Treatment Service (CTS) and the Veterans Trauma Network) and capture better data to improve future health provision. It also means that the NHS is better able to meet the health commitments of the Armed Forces Covenant, which says the Armed Forces community, including veterans, should face no disadvantage in accessing health services and should receive priority care for military attributable conditions, subject to clinical need.

A veteran is someone who has served in the British Armed Forces (Regular or Reserve) for at least one day. Veterans also include any member of the Merchant Marine who has served in a war zone. This includes crew from convoys in World War 2 and more recently in the Falklands conflict and Gulf Wars.

About 18,000 service people move back into civilian life every year and whilst most of these individuals have similar levels of health to the general population, around 2,000 leave on medical grounds. The top reasons for medical discharge are for issues relating to back, knees, mental health and hearing.
